NHS Treatments

We are proud to offer NHS appointments at most of our practices and offer the same level of customer care whether you are an NHS patient or a private patient.

At SmileOne dental, all of our NHS dentists are highly qualified and approved by the Care Quality Commission.

As part of our commitment to preventative dentistry, we offer free dental examinations and NHS care to all children who are registered with us.

NHS dental charges

The cost for a NHS dental treatment changed on April 1st 2019. There are three standard charges for all NHS dental treatments:

Band 1 course of treatment – £22.70

This covers an examination, diagnosis and advice. If necessary, it also includes X-rays, a scale and polish and planning for further treatment.

Band 2 course of treatment – £62.10

This covers all treatment covered by Band 1, plus additional treatment, such as fillings, root canal treatment and removing teeth (extractions).

Band 3 course of treatment – £269.30

This covers all treatment covered by Bands 1 and 2, plus more complex procedures such as crowns, dentures and bridges.

Who is entitled to free dental care on the NHS?

You do not have to pay for NHS dental treatment if, when the treatment starts, you are:

  • Aged under 18

  • Under 19 and receiving full-time education

  • Pregnant or have had a baby in the previous 12 months

  • Staying in an NHS hospital and your treatment is carried out by the hospital dentist

  • An NHS hospital dental service outpatient (however, you may have to pay for your dentures or bridges).

You do not have to pay if, during the course of treatment, you or your partner receive:

  • Income Support

  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

  • Pension Credit guarantee credit

  • Universal Credit and meet the criteria

Other exceptions are that:

  • You are named on a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate or you are entitled to an NHS tax credit exemption certificate.

  • You are named on a valid HC2 certificate.

The NHS will provide any treatment that you need to keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy and free of pain.

Decisions about which treatment is appropriate for you will be based upon a clinical assessment and clinical judgement.

Visit the NHS website to find out if or when you may have to pay for your NHS dental treatment www.nhs.uk

Exemption for pregnant women

Pregnant women and those who have had a baby in the last 12 months get free NHS dental treatment. You may have to show proof such as a maternity exemption certificate (MatEx), a maternity certificate (MATB1) or your baby’s birth certificate.

However, if you have given birth more than 12 months ago you will not be entitled to free NHS dental treatment. Please note that your MatEx alone only gives exemption from NHS prescriptions.

Not available on the NHS

The NHS will not provide cosmetic treatment options such as teeth whitening which are not clinically necessary.

Where treatment is clinically necessary the dentist will offer you a treatment option that is clinically appropriate.

If you choose to have alternative treatment options then you will have to pay privately for these.
