Introduction to Orthodontics
Nothing is more important than a genuine, heartfelt smile. Whether in your professional life or when socialising, an attractive smile can make you feel happier and more confident as well as make the right impression!
Orthodontic treatment uses appliances to straighten teeth and gradually move them into more ideal positions over time. As well as greatly improving aesthetic appeal, orthodontic corrections improve the evenness and function of your bite and reduce your risk of undesirable problems such as tooth decay and gum disease.
Children and adults can be treated with orthodontics, indeed, it’s easier to correct aspects of the bite at a young age than it is years down the line. Early interventions are also used to correct severe problems with the way the jaw fits together, usually during adolescence.
What can orthodontic treatment do for you?
Orthodontic treatment gives you:
- Straight teeth, which are easy to clean
- A beautiful smile
- A reduced likelihood of damage to prominent teeth
- An improved bite
- Ease with eating
What does orthodontic treatment correct?
Orthodontics is a dental specialty concerned with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities such as:
- Crooked or crowded teeth
- Missing or extra teeth
- Impacted or un-erupted teeth
- Protruding teeth which are prone to trauma
- A reverse bite
- A deep bite which may be traumatizing your gums
- Preparation for advanced dental treatment such as crowns, bridges or dental implants
- Reversing the drifting of teeth in patients who have suffered from advanced gum disease
- Misaligned jaw positions.
Orthodontic treatment is specifically designed and planned with your needs in mind by our Specialist Orthodontist and therefore if you’ve ever thought about improving your smile, no matter what age, orthodontics may be for you!
Your orthodontic assessment
During your initial consultation, your Orthodontist will take time to listen to your concerns and understand what you hope to achieve from any orthodontic treatment. She will carry out a thorough examination of your teeth, jaws and face. We ask that you set aside approximately half an hour for this initial visit, as we believe that it is important for you to have a clear understanding of all aspects of your proposed treatment.
Once you are keen to proceed, this is usually followed by photographs, radiographs (x-rays) and impressions (moulds) or scans of your teeth. Your orthodontic needs are unique, and these records help us to diagnose any underlying problems and formulate a comprehensive treatment plan. We then send you a detailed report and schedule another appointment to discuss this and your digital Invisalign ClinCheck treatment simulation if applicable. This last appointment can be either face to face or via a video consult.
You also have the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have and discuss the various payment options. We offer a range of flexible payment plans to help you spread the cost of your treatment.
Having orthodontic treatment
Once all the diagnostic information has been taken, the treatment plan has been agreed, we will then be ready to place the braces. Before a brace is fitted, we may ask you to see your Dentist for professional cleaning of your teeth and gums.
Our orthodontic treatments
The are many different types of orthodontic treatments available. The correct treatment for you will depend on your individual needs following an assessment.
